Hatidze scours dizzyingly steep mountainsides in search of the bee colonies that live among the rocks. She lives with her elderly mother in a stone cottage in the breathtakingly beautiful mountains of northern Macedonia. The wild bees are her life, her passion and her source of income, and she keeps them lovingly in accordance with tradition.
“Take half of the honey and leave the other half for the bees ” – that’s her golden rule. She sells the honey at a market some four hours away on foot. When a noisy family arrives with an old caravan, seven unruly children and a herd of cows, change is on the way. Hatidze’s familiar way of live is about to come to an end.
The visually amazing, poetic ‘Honeyland’ is a film about traditions under threat and the delicate balance between people and nature. The film has been showered with awards, including the Grand Jury Prize, the Cinematography Award and the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award at the Sundance Film Festival 2019.
