De eenvoudige vissersjongen Adam wordt toegelaten op de prestigieuze Al-Azhar Universiteit in Caïro, baken van de soennitische islam. Als de grootimam plotseling overlijdt, blijken de moslimbroeders en de Nationale Veiligheidsdienst tegengestelde belangen te hebben. Zonder het te weten wordt Adam gerekruteerd om de keuze voor de nieuwe grootimam te beïnvloeden. Als hij achter de waarheid komt, zit hij gevangen tussen twee vuren.
Regisseur Saleh liet zich voor deze spannende thriller inspireren door de roman In de Naam van de Roos van Umberto Eco. Hij koppelt eeuwenoude religieuze rituelen aan politieke intriges en bevraagt hiermee de verhouding tussen kerk en staat. Cairo Conspiracy werd bekroond voor het beste scenario op het Filmfestival van Cannes. Splendid, cleverly written spy thriller in which a young Koran student is caught in a power struggle within the Egyptian religious and political elites.
An ordinary young fisherman called Adam is admitted to the prestigious Al-Azhar University in Cairo, a beacon of Sunni Islam. After the Grand Imam suddenly dies, it appears that the Muslim Brotherhood and the National Security Agency have conflicting interests. Unknowingly, Adam is recruited to influence the choice of a new Grand Imam. When he finds out the truth, he is caught between two fires.
For this suspenseful thriller, director Saleh drew inspiration from the Umberto Eco novel The Name of the Rose. By linking centuries-old religious rituals with political intrigue, he explores the relationship between church and state. Cairo Conspiracy was awarded Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival.
