Die Middag

Roya, een uitgeprocedeerde vluchteling, ontvlucht haar asielzoekerscentrum om te voorkomen dat ze wordt teruggestuurd naar Iran. Met alleen een adres op zak hoopt ze een tijdje te kunnen verblijven bij Nassim, een Iraans meisje dat afgewezen vluchtelingen bijstaat. Maar in plaats van Nassim treft ze een jongen die zegt de broer van Nassim te zijn. Hij is de sleutel van het appartement kwijt, zegt hij, dus tot zijn zus terugkeert kan hij de deur niet voor Roya openen. En zo besluit Roya, zonder andere bestemming in het verschiet, in de gang op Nassim te wachten. De jonge man houdt Roya op afstand, maar zij laat zich niet zomaar wegjagen. Langzaam maar zeker ontstaat er een poëtisch, verbaal spel van afstoten en aantrekken tussen twee mensen die beiden uit hetzelfde thuisland zijn gevlucht, maar desondanks heel anders in het leven staan.

Very personal, impressive feature film debut about two Iranian refugees in the Netherlands who meet in an apartment building and discover that each has a very different outlook on life.

Roya, a refugee whose asylum application has ultimately been denied, flees from her refugee center to avoid being sent back to Iran. Roya has only the address of Nassim, a young Iranian woman who helps refugees denied asylum, and hopes to stay with her for a while. Instead, at that address she finds a young man who claims to be Nassim’s brother. He says he can’t open the door for Roya because he has lost the key. And so Roya, who has nowhere else to go, decides to wait in the hallway outside his door. Though he keeps her at a distance, Roya does not allow herself to be chased away. Slowly but surely a poetic play of words, of attraction and repulsion, unfolds between two people who fled from the same homeland yet have very different perspectives on life.
