Meneer Chow (Tony Leung) en mevrouw Chan (Maggie Cheung) zijn toevallig elkaars buren in een appartementengebouw in het Hongkong van 1962. Hun echtgenoten blijken een affaire te hebben en de twee vinden excuses om elkaar te troosten. De liefde fakkelt omhoog maar de gevoelens die daarbij horen worden in het gareel gehouden.
In the Mood for Love was in Cannes onderdeel van de Gouden Palm-competitie, kreeg een speciale prijs voor cinematografie en montage en Tony Leung won de Best Actor Award. De stijlvolle aankleding, het smetteloze voorkomen van Tony Leung en de schoonheid van Maggie Cheung, die beiden zeer sterk acteren, maakten de film tot een monument van esthetisch genot. Dat geldt ook voor de soundtrack, waarop crooner Nat King Cole te horen is. De fotografie van Wong Kar Wai’s favoriete cameraman Christopher Doyle, het spel en de muziek laten je in een ritmisch vloeiend geheel getuige worden van diepe, onuitsprekelijke gevoelens.

Mr Chow (Tony Leung) and Mrs Chan (Maggie Cheung) are neighbours in an apartment building in 1962 Hong Kong. After they discover that their partners are having an affair, they find excuses to comfort each other. Love flares up, but the feelings that come with it are kept in check.
In the Mood for Love participated in the Palme d’Or competition at Cannes, where it received a special prize for cinematography and editing, and Tony Leung won the Best Actor Award. The film’s stylish set design and the strong performances by the impeccable Tony Leung and beautiful Maggie Cheung make it exceptionally aesthetically appealing. Equally pleasing is the soundtrack, which features crooner Nat King Cole.
