Dankzij een reservoir aan archiefmateriaal (interviews en optredens) wordt de canon van de Amerikaanse popmuziek in deze uitbundige documentaire up to date gebracht: getuigenissen van Penniman zelf, zijn vrienden en familie, muzikale legendes en pionierende zwarte en queer academici eisen een geschiedenis terug die moedwillig is toegeëigend door witte artiesten en instituten. He was famous for hits including Tutti Frutti, Long Tall Sally, Lucille and Good Golly Miss Molly: Richard Wayne Penniman, a.k.a. Little Richard. With his flamboyant looks in the 1940s and ’50s he was a drag queen avant la lettre. A reservoir of archival material (interviews and performances) brings the canon of American pop music up to date in this exuberant documentary. In testimonials, Penniman himself, his friends and family, music legends and pioneering Black and queer academics demand the reclaiming of a history that has been intentionally usurped by white artists and institutions.
