Grace Pudel is een introverte vrouw uit Canberra, die zich sinds de dood van haar vader en de scheiding van haar tweelingbroer Gilbert steeds verder in haar schulp terugtrekt. Terwijl Grace haar levensverhaal vertelt aan haar favoriete huisdier, de slak Sylvia, ontvouwt zich een prachtig, tragikomisch universum gevuld met warmte, excentrieke personages, melancholie en visuele humor. De tragiek in de levens van deze met veel liefde in klei vormgegeven hoofdpersonages stapelt zich bijzonder hoog op. Maar zoals alleen Elliot dat kan, verbindt hij op magische wijze de ellende met brutale humor tot een hartverwarmende, hartverscheurende én hilarische film.

Memoir of a Snail is gebaseerd op verhalen uit Elliots eigen omgeving en vooral op die van zijn moeder, daarom omschrijft hij de film ook als een “clayography”. De film heeft een weergaloze stemmencast, waaronder Sarah Snook, Jacki Weaver en Nick Cave, werd bekroond met de hoofdprijs op het belangrijkste animatiefilmfestival van Annecy en genomineerd voor een Oscar.

An enchanting and visually stunning stop-motion film about the bittersweet life of Grace Pudel, collector of snails, romantic stories and guinea pigs.

Grace is an introverted woman from Canberra, who has retreated further and further into her shell since the death of her father and the divorce of her twin brother Gilbert. As Grace tells her life story to her favourite pet, the snail Sylvia, a beautiful, tragicomic universe filled with warmth, eccentric characters, melancholy and visual humour unfolds. The tragedy in the lives of these protagonists, lovingly sculpted from clay, reaches towering heights. But in his inimitable way, Elliot magically interweaves the misery with cheeky humour to create a heartwarming, heartbreaking and hilarious film.

Memoir of a Snail is based on stories from Elliot’s own life and especially that of his mother, which is why he describes the film as a ‘clayography’. The film has an outstanding voice cast, including Sarah Snook, Jacki Weaver and Nick Cave, it won top prize at the prestigious Annecy animation film festival and received an Oscar nomination.
