Île de France, 1759. De tot slaaf gemaakte Mati droomt van een vrij leven, ver weg van de suikerrietplantage. Volgens de overlevering zou er ergens op Île de France (het huidige Mauritius) een plek bestaan waar voormalige slaven in vrijheid leven. Mati’s vader Massamba gelooft daar niets van, en vindt dat ze zich beter kan schikken in haar lot. Dat is immers de enige kans om te overleven. Wanneer Mati toch ontsnapt en de plantagehouder de beruchte slavenjager Madame de la Victoire inhuurt om haar te vangen, ziet Massamba geen andere mogelijkheid dan zijn ketenen af te gooien en zijn dochter te vinden, voor het te laat is.
Ni chaînes ni maîtres is de eerste recente grote Franse speelfilm die een blik op het Franse slavernijverleden werpt. Voor het scenario werkte regisseur Simon Moutaïrou nauw samen met historici om de film zo realistisch mogelijk te maken en hiermee bij te dragen aan het bewustzijn rond het Franse slavernijverleden. “Rauw, imponerend debuut: Frankrijks eerste grote publieksfilm over de slavernijgeschiedenis gaat indirect ook over Nederland” (Filmkrant)

Historical drama about the flight of a father and daughter escaping from the plantation where they were held as slaves.
Île de France, 1759. Mati is a slave who dreams of a free life far away from the sugar cane plantation. Tradition has it that somewhere on Île de France (present-day Mauritius) there is a place where former slaves live in freedom. Mati’s father Massamba does not believe this and thinks she had better resign herself to her fate, as that is the way to survive. When Mati does escape and the plantation owner hires the notorious slave hunter Madame de la Victoire to capture her, Massamba sees no option but to throw off his chains and find his daughter, before it is too late.
Ni chaînes ni maîtres is the first recent major French feature film to shed light on the country’s slavery past. For the screenplay, director Simon Moutaïrou worked closely with historians to make the film as realistic as possible and thus contribute to awareness on France’s history of slavery. “Raw, impressive debut: France’s first major public film on the history of slavery is indirectly also about the Netherlands” (Filmkrant)
