Kelly Reichardt – Verenigde Staten, 2013 – 113 minutes – spoken language: English, with Dutch subtitles
A gigantic hydro-electric dam. When it opens, the water comes out with irresistible force, intimidating not only the movie viewer but also Josh and Dena, two people in their twenties. In their eyes dams like this one are killing scores of salmon in order to run air conditioners and keep golf courses green. Together with their friend Harnon they decide that it’s time to act.
The movie first follows their attack on the dam. But its main interest is what motivated the three young people, and what the effects of their deed are on their relationships and lives. Slowly, compellingly, it drags us into their world.
This screening is part of the Studium Generale series Coping with Climate Change, see: wur.nl/studiumgenerale. Free entrance for WUR-card holders.

About the series Coping with Climate Change:
The constant stream of bad news concerning human induced climate change, environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity has become a given. But people can react very differently to this news. We can ridicule it, ignore it, get depressed by it, radicalize because of it. This series explores those different reactions and their possible consequences.
