De Portugese Aurora werkt in een sorteercentrum in Schotland. Terwijl de orders blijven binnenstromen en het door efficiëntie gedreven algoritme haar werkdruk bepaalt, worstelt ze met de eentonigheid van haar baan. Menselijkheid vindt ze alleen nog bij haar collega’s en huisgenoten, die net als Aurora arbeidsmigranten zijn. On Falling is het indrukwekkende speelfilmdebuut van de Portugese regisseur Laura Carreira. Zij werkte voor deze film samen met het productieteam van Ken Loach, en diens kloppend sociaal hart is dan ook voelbaar aanwezig. Aurora, a young Portuguese woman, works in a sorting centre in Scotland. The stream of orders is constant and the efficiency-driven algorithm determines her workload; meanwhile she struggles with the monotony of her job. The only place she still finds humanity is with her colleagues and housemates who, like her, are migrant workers. Stuck in a system where there is no time for dreams, she still manages to enjoy simple moments of happiness – and to hope for a way out.
On Falling is the impressive feature film debut of Portuguese director Laura Carreira. For this film she collaborated with Ken Loach’s production team; their social heartbeat is palpable in this movie. Joana Santos is brilliant as the lonely Aurora who, with great effort, remains upright in an indifferent, materialistic environment.
