Matthias Glasner – Germany, 2024 – 185 minutes – language spoken: German, with English subtitles
Lissy, Tom and Ellen are all members of the Lunies family. Their last name seems to be the only thing they have in common, as they otherwise lead completely different lives. Tom is a conductor trying to perfect an orchestral piece, while his sister Ellen wrestles with her inner demons. Their mother Lissy breathes a sigh of relief when her husband, who has dementia, is finally admitted to a care home. Though her happiness is short-lived when her own health suddenly starts to deteriorate. Basically, there is nothing that truly connects these family members – until they are confronted with death…
Director Matthias Glasner brings an autobiographical story to the screen with Sterben (Dying), told from different points of view, presenting the same events from various angles. Sterben was named best German film earlier this year and won the Best Screenplay award at the Berlin International Film Festival. “Sterben is a delightfully vicious portrait of a family, where every encounter is just an accident waiting to happen.” (NRC ****)
