Gabriel Francis Paz Goodenough – United States, 2023 – 91 minutes – spoken language: English, with English subtitles

Like many areas in the United States, the City of Baltimore has been plagued by gun violence. Amid the George Floyd uprising, Brandon Scott, a young reform-minded leader, is elected mayor. Immediately, Scott introduces an ambitious public health-focused approach to violence reduction. He believes this will lower the city’s murder rate more effectively than a hard line law and order approach.

But shortly after Scott has entered office, violence surges to new highs. As the media and political foes attack his plan, he remains committed to his principles even as it puts his future as a politician in danger. Throughout his first year in office, the cameras continue to follow Scott to see if his plan will work. Can it help to heal Baltimore? And maybe even reveal a path forward for the nation?

This feature film in the Movies that Matter on Tour series will be introduced and followed by a discussion, led by Percy Cicilia, who works as a programme creator and multilingual reading consultant at the “bblthk.” His focus is on societal engagement, digital citizenship, reading and media proficiency for youths. In daily life he is Diversity, Inclusion, Equity and Social Safety trainer, and councilman for GroenLinks Wageningen. Subtitles and discussion in English.

With the On Tour program, Movies that Matter organizes screenings with in-depth programmes in The Netherlands and online. They do this in collaboration with a diverse array of organizations and companies. Among other things, they also organise the annual Movies that Matter festival in The Hague.
