De compilatiefilm The Brilliant Biograph brengt je terug naar het leven rond 1900, toen steden als Berlijn, Amsterdam en Londen een sterke groei doormaakten; ook de opnamen van een betoverend Venetië – toen vooral toeristenbestemming voor de happy few – zijn van een indrukwekkende schoonheid.

Mutoscope and Biograph Company maakte als een van de eerste filmbedrijven opnamen van belangrijke gebeurtenissen en evenementen, die de hele wereld overgingen. In de collecties van de BFI en Eye is een deel van de films bewaard gebleven; met tweehonderd filmpjes beheert Eye zelfs de grootste Mutoscope and Biograph Company-collectie ter wereld.

Met steun van de Europese Commissie zijn vijftig films uit de Mutoscope and Biograph-collecties van Eye en de BFI digitaal gerestaureerd (8K). Deze één-minuten-tijdcapsules – gedraaid op 68mm-nitraat – zijn vermaard vanwege de unieke resolutie; de opnamen uit de begintijd van de cinema behoren tot de scherpste en rijkst gedetailleerde beelden uit de filmgeschiedenis.

Film critic and Volkskrant journalist Kevin Toma introduces this unique compilation of some of the earliest moving images ever captured.

The compilation film The Brilliant Biograph transports viewers back to life around 1900, a time when cities such as Berlin, Amsterdam and London were experiencing rapid growth. The footage of enchanting Venice, which was primarily a tourist destination for the wealthy elite at the time, is also strikingly beautiful.

The Mutoscope and Biograph Company was one of the first film companies to record significant events and broadcast them across the globe. Some of these works have been preserved in the collections of the BFI and Eye. In fact, with two hundred films, Eye holds the world’s largest Mutoscope and Biograph Company collection.

With support from the European Commission, fifty of these films from the BFI and Eye collections have been digitally restored in 8K resolution. These one-minute time capsules, shot on 68 mm nitrate, are renowned for their unique resolution; in fact, these visuals from the early days of cinema are among the sharpest and most detailed in film history.
