Ingrid (Julianne Moore) is een succesvol schrijfster die ontdekt dat haar oude vriendin Martha (Tilda Swinton) ziek is. The Room Next Door, Almodóvars eerste Engelstalige speelfilm, ging in première op het Filmfestival van Venetië en won daar de prestigieuze Gouden Leeuw voor Beste Film. Best-selling author Ingrid (Julianne Moore) finds out that her old friend Martha (Tilda Swinton) is terminally ill. They had lost sight of each other, but when they meet up again they reconnect instantly through sharing memories. When Martha’s health deteriorates, she asks Ingrid to support her in her chosen end-of-life journey. They leave New York and move to a beautiful house just outside the city. Surrounded by nature, the two women, who are both passionate about art and had dated the same man (John Turturro), celebrate life while they still can.
The Room Next Door, Almodóvar’s first English-language feature film, premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the prestigious Golden Lion for Best Film.
