De 19-jarige Alyssa woont in een afgelegen stadje in Tunesië waar niet veel gebeurt en waar ze zich hopeloos verveelt. Ze is wanhopig op zoek naar meer. Wanneer zich een geweldige kans voordoet om in Europa te gaan wonen en werken, vraagt Alyssa haar beste vriend Medhi om met haar mee te gaan op een reis van Tunis naar Djerba. Hij is de dromer met artistieke talenten, zij is de ritselaar met een uitdagende drang om te slagen. Maar hun vriendschap wordt op de proef gesteld, omdat de gevaren op de weg trauma’s uit het verleden oproepen. Het wordt een reis vol hoop, onrust, uitdaging en zelfontdekking.

Where the wind comes from is een fijne feelgood film over vriendschap, gedrenkt in warme gele, rode en vooral blauwe kleuren. Een film die zowel fris en indringend is, speels en serieus, visueel sterk en emotioneel resonant. Met de nodige humor laat regisseur Guellaty zien dat dromen niet naïef, maar soms zelfs noodzakelijk zijn. De film toont met zachtheid en compassie een nieuwe generatie Tunesiërs, die andere verwachtingen hebben van de maatschappij.

Nineteen-year-old Alyssa lives in a remote Tunisian town where not much happens, leaving her hopelessly bored. She is desperate to find something more. When a great opportunity to live and work in Europe presents itself, she asks her best friend, Medhi, to join her on a trip from Tunis to Djerba. He is an artistic dreamer; she is a determined go-getter. However, their friendship is put to the test when dangers on the road evoke past traumas. It will be a journey full of hope, turmoil, challenges and self-discovery.

Where the Wind Comes From is a lovely feel-good movie about friendship, drenched in warm yellows, reds and especially blues. It is a film that is both fresh and compelling, playful and serious, visually powerful and emotionally resonant. With a touch of humour, director Amel Guellaty shows that dreams are not naive, but sometimes even necessary. The film gently and compassionately portrays a new generation of Tunisians with different expectations of society.
