“Energetic and true to life, never heavy or preachy!”
An award-winning social masterpiece about poverty and irresponsible parenting with leading roles for six-year-old Brooklyn Prince and 23-year-old Bria Vinaite.
Six-year-old Moonee lives with her mother Halley in a motel in the shadow of Disney World, Florida. The summer vacation has just started and Moonee and her friends fill their days my exploring the site and getting up to all kinds of mischief.
Her 22-year-old mother is doing her best to care for Moonee, but as a twenty-something she feels the pull of simply wanting to have fun. Besides, Moonee seems to be managing fine. Motel manager Bobby appears to be the only adult around trying to keep the kids under control. But then real life catches up with Halley and she has to face the harsh reality of being a mother.
Director Baker shows a world of inequality through the eyes of the children. The young Brooklyn Prince steals the show: she is fantastic as six-year-old Moonee, enthusiastic and unrestrained; a child who copies her mother’s behaviour. The chosen location with the Disney World dream factory in the background makes the whole thing supercharged. Precisely the fact that close by children are having the time of their lives with their wealthy parents makes Moonee’s situation all the more painful.
To date ‘The Florida Project’ has won 58 film awards and received more than 100 nominations, including an Oscar nomination.
