Cartoonist John Callahan (Joaquin Phoenix) bubbles with enthusiasm – but he also has a serious drinking problem. A wild night of partying lands him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

In this apparently hopeless situation, however, he makes a friend for life within an eccentric AA group. He also meets the love of his life and achieves national acclaim with his celebrated hilarious cartoons – which have been animated for this film. Armed with a healthy dose of sarcasm and brutal honesty, John recaptures his zest for life.
