You can now see a digitally restored version of this film classic; it has been voted the best Czech film ever. Set in the Middle Ages, the plot centres on two families of thieves. Following a failed robbery, one family, led by Kozlík senior, takes hostage the son of a German count. After the feudal king starts hunting down the criminals, the Kozlíks seek out the other family of plunderers: the Lazars. When rapprochement fails, the Kozlíks’ son Mikoláš kidnaps Lazar’s attractive daughter Marketa. Now holding two hostages, Kozlík prepares to take revenge on the king, who attempts to get his subjects involved by turning the conflict into a battle between Christians and pagans.
The film is enjoyable on various levels: the ingenious story lines, the fabulous cinematography that offers surprising visual images and the intoxicating soundtrack.
