In cooperation with Palestina Link and with an eye on Christmas, Movie W is screening for one time only the documentary Open Bethlehem, a film that is not on general release in the Netherlands. Director Leila Sansour will be present to introduce her film and to answer questions from the audience.
This multifaceted, socially engaged film was made over a ten-year period. This included the time during which Israel was being fortified with a wall. The result is an intimate and moving portrait of the various residents of Bethlehem and of the director’s life history; he grew up in this city. Bethlehem is changing rapidly. Reports predict that if current trends continue, the Christian community in Bethlehem, a city that serves as the model for a multi-religious Middle East, may disappear within one generation.
Open Bethlehem is also a campaign cry for people to tell the city’s story and to encourage the Israeli government to once again give everyone, residents and non-residents alike, unrestricted access to this beautiful, historic city.
