Winner of the Cinematography & Sound Award for the Best Dutch Documentary (IDFA 2015)! A Strange Love Affair with Ego is a magical story exploring the boundary between healthy and unhealthy egotism and centring on the close bonds between two sisters. As a child, director Ester Gould knew exactly what she wanted to be when she grew up: her sister Rowan, two years older than her. Her sister was full of self-confidence and the world seemed to be her oyster: “Anything is possible, as long as you believe in yourself.” In this compelling film, we are taken on an amazing journey that is all about the need to be noticed. Ester follows her sister from the Scottish countryside to Los Angeles in a story that encompasses various individuals and stages in life. Gradually, she discovers that the Superwoman she had admired so much as a child never existed. As in the Greek myth about beautiful Narcissus who fell in love with his own reflection, Rowan’s self-confidence turns into megalomania.
