Room is based on the eponymous novel (2010) by the Irish writer Emma Donoghue. Five-year-old Jack lives with his mother in one room. The outside world, his mother has told him, is evil and cruel and populated by aliens. It is not a safe place. Meanwhile Jack has created a complete fantasy world for himself, in which he regards the objects around him as his friends. But Joy can’t face keeping the truth from her son any longer. Jack finds it hard to accept this truth, after all life within this confined space is all he has ever known. Nonetheless, it is time to escape…
A mother who fears for her child’s wellbeing is a lioness. Joy’s fighting spirit finds expression in her protection of her son and in her having the best of intentions for him. Director Abrahamson reveals to his audience exactly what they need to know and lets imagination do the rest. The young actor Jacob Tremblay (Jack) displays unparalleled empathy and, for her role as the mother Joy, actress Brie Larson received the much-coveted Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
