Journalist and master interviewer Louis Theroux has a wealth of experience dealing with eccentric and extreme behaviour. In his My Scientology Movie, with his familiar, charming ways, understated British humour and open, relaxed attitude, he manages to show us something of the hermetically sealed Church of Scientology. The immensely rich organisation has unparalleled influence in many circles. Those who have left it are said to have been pursued, threatened and financially plundered.
Theroux is not put off when his request to visit Scientology headquarters is resolutely denied. Instead, he attempts to gain insight into the methods of this shrewd organisation. Inspired by film techniques used by the Church itself, and with the aid of former members, he hires actors to portray Tom Cruise and Scientology leader David Miscavige. In the process he encounters strange people who are suddenly filming their own documentaries near his shoots, and who insist that the public road is private property. They even attempt to infiltrate his plan.
My Scientology Movie, from Oscar-winning producer Simon Chinn, is full of comical moments and unexpected entanglements that make it even stranger than fiction.
