The charming, light-hearted relationship comedy Maggie’s Plan paints the lives of modern, ambitious thirty-somethings whose diaries get permanently in the way of romantic love.
New Yorker Maggie (Greta Gerwig) lives a fairly ordered life but her failure to maintain a relationship longer than six months means her strong desire to have children is unfulfilled. She decides to raise a child on her own and then meets the charismatic John, a writer who appears to be the man of her dreams. He may be trapped in a loveless marriage but that seems no more than a minor obstacle. The film then jumps forward and we see Maggie and John living together with their daughter. To Maggie’s great disappointment, John is not at all how he initially seemed so she devises an absurd but ingenious plan… and free-spirited Maggie transforms into a heroine of our time.
With humour and irony, Maggie’s Plan has another take on the standard message of the relationship comedy genre that a loving relationship solves everything.
