Sara is a 14-year-old girl growing up in a strict Christian family of goat farmers in rural Texas. She has been raised to be subordinate to men and to keep her emotional and physical purity intact until she marries. When she meets Colby, the boy next door, doubts are sown. His is a less strict Christian family and he aspires to become a rodeo rider. The puppy love that blossoms tentatively between them is one of pure naivety, but it propels Sara into a identity crisis. Her parents, so well-versed in the Bible, have imprinted her with ideals that now seem less easy to take for granted.
Applying a highly realistic style, and an extremely strong and intimate approach, director Roberto Minervini explores the religious fundamentalism, the traditional gender relations and the conservative standards and values that so colour rural America. In November, you can see his latest, award-winning film, The Other Side.
