Now fully restored, this playful, energetic gem is as refreshing, funny and topical today as it was when it was made in 1966. The Daisies are two girls aged 17, who share the same name: Marie. Sitting beside the swimming pool one day, they decide that the world is rotten and conventions meaningless and so they are entitled to act in a similar manner. They spend some time amusing themselves by tantalizing and then disappointing older men. Tiring of this game, they go to a nightclub where they misbehave until they are thrown out. But now they are unstoppable, and they cheerfully turn their attention to their new target…
Madeliefjes (Sedmikrásky) manages to visually surprise from start to finish. The editing is superb. The sequence with the train rails, for instance, is enchantingly beautiful, but is over before you know it. Never mind, every shot is perfection. The sound is phenomenal, with countless tricks and jokes. The actresses are gorgeous to look at, whether they are assuming the role of innocent schoolgirl or sexy temptress. This surrealist, anarchist fantasy has proven to be the most adventurous of all Czech films. It is a timeless masterpiece. Winner of the Grand Prix de l’UCC 1969.
