Modern western with powerful insights into and criticism of American society.
Modern, slightly melancholic western about the destructive role of the banks in Texas. The plot revolves around two inseparable brothers who have devised a plan to keep their family farm and ranch after their mother’s death. They accumulate the money they need to buy back the plot of land from the bank by robbing this same bank more than once. Their plans are pretty well-conceived, but then agent Marcus gets involved. Close to retirement, he is looking for one last triumph.
As well as the usual action and chase scenes, Hell or High Water includes powerful insights into and criticism of American society. The mood quickly swings from family drama to cynical humour. Cleverly, all these elements remain in balance throughout the film. The great soundtrack is by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. Hell or High Water was showered with praise at Cannes Film Festival and has been nominated for three Golden Globes in 2017.
