Engaging tragicomedy values joie de vivre over building a career.
Title character Toni, whose real name is Winfred, is a figure born of necessity. He has made little of his life, but loves it nonetheless. Its tone and direction are set by his absurd sense of humour. His daughter Ines, by contrast, has been climbing the corporate career ladder and has lost her sense of humour along the way. Winfred becomes painfully aware of this when he visits her in Bucharest and finds she has no time for him. She is busy reeling in a big fish in the oil sector. To her mind, her father is someone who simply gets in the way, even though he uses his oafish charm to enchant her target. The longer he spends with Ines, the more Winfred worries about her. Action must be taken, and that’s a job for Toni Erdmann.
The recipient of many awards, including the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes Film Festival, and nominated for the Golden Globe 2017 (Best Film).
