In the run-up to the Liberty Festival in Wageningen and in cooperation with film museum EYE, Movie W presents a unique film concert: To Regain by Work (Herwinnen door Werken); a filmed colour portrait of The Netherlands just after the Second World War, with a prominent role for the Arnhem area, including Wageningen. The imposing, penetrating images are accompanied by live music, performed by film composer/pianist Kevin Toma. Eye-curator Rommy Albers gives explanatory commentary on the images.
In April/May 1945, Alex Roosdorp and his wife Marie Roosdorp-van den Berg began filming of the devastation around them: destroyed towns, destroyed infrastructure and flooded lands. The images of Arnhem ruined by bombardments and the peninsula Walcheren flooded by the German forces are astounding. Roosdorp and his wife traveled hundreds of kilometers on their bikes to record everything. The couple had a keen eye for the small ways in which everyday life continued in the liberated Netherlands.
Only in 2014 this extraordinary, historical film was discovered in the archives of the film museum. Recently the film has been digitalised to show in cinema quality at appropriate occasions.
