‘For many reasons a unique and inspiring, perhaps even an action-inspiring, must-see.’
‘The film Shows how much humanity lies hidden behind brave protest against inhumanity.’
In 2014 the Syrian city of Raqqa was conquered by IS and declared the capital city of the Caliphate. The documentary thriller City of Ghosts shows how three ordinary young men in Raqqa carried out non-violent protest against IS via the media. The film is a compelling and shocking record of courage, fear, extremism, protest and life in exile. Oscar favourite for Best Documentary 2017. Topical, intense and moving.
Operating under the name “Raqqa is being slaughtered silently” the three friends Aziz, Mohamad and Hamoud were the only people to send films, photographs and messages out into the world from inside the Caliphate. This quickly put their lives at risk. They were able to escape to Germany, where they continue their work to this day. But even there they aren’t safe from IS. Director Matthew Heineman met the men and recorded their life stories with great compassion. Rarely does anyone get this close to them. City of Ghosts also addresses the increasing media control and polarisation in the West. Movie W has invited Amnesty to introduce the film and lead a discussion after the screening.
