In the late 1990s, Jaap van Bruchem and his co-researchers examined the importance to healthy dairy farming of closing the cycle. This research took place at Minderhoudhoeve , WUR’s experimental farm. Reducing nitrate nitrogen and concentrates gave a greatly improved operating efficiency and seemed a good alternative to continuous expansion. In addition, it promotes soil and animal health and contributes to the achievement of the objectives for biodiversity, the environment and climate. Unfortunately, funding was stopped at the time, so there was no follow-up research.
Now, almost 20 years later, Huib Schoonhoven and Karen Kuiper have made a film; it is intended to promote educational projects that can further propagate the concept depicted. Among other things, the film provides a retrospective of the research that was abandoned in the 1990s, and a number of dairy farmers share their current vision and experiences.
