To make this magnificent, colourful, socially engaged documentary, complete with a strong soundtrack that includes James Brown, filmmaker Jacqueline van Vugt travelled to Africa. She watched the borders that lie between Nigeria and the European Union: from Nigeria to Niger, to Burkina Faso, to Senegal and so on northwards. At every border she encountered countless people dreaming of a better life. They have set their sights on the promised land, Europe, where everything is better. Many dare to make the crossing, accepting the risk of a voyage in a small boat on the open sea. When you watch this film, these people come alive to you; you know who they are, where they come from, what obstacles they have to surmount to emigrate and, especially, what drives them. This film won the FIPRESCI award at the Krakow Film Festival 2014.
At the first screening on Friday 16 January director Jacqueline van Vugt will be present to give an introduction. There is also a special photo exhibition in building ‘t Venster.
