The true story of road-movie Wild is based on Cheryl Strader’s autobiography of the same name. In 1995, 26-year-old Cheryl (Reese Witherspoon) decides to walk the Pacific Crest Trail, alone and without having trained: a fabulous but incredibly challenging hike of over 1700 kilometres from Mexico to Canada. She is prompted by her need to come to terms with a series of personal tragedies and to pick up the pieces of her life again. The expedition will change her life forever.
Without experience and carrying a backpack that is much too heavy, she withstands three months of intense heat and bitter cold. She faces bears and rattlesnakes and experiences both the devastating beauty and terrible loneliness of the landscape. Using strong sensory perceptions, Director Vallée recalls past events in Cheryl’s life where he feels this helps explain her deep-seated feelings. Small things like a scent or an image bring back memories of the difficult times she is trying to lay to rest. Witherspoon’s acting is mesmerizing, and supported by musical soundscapes and internal monologues. We can share both her fears and intense enjoyment. Wild is a enchanting, almost physical film experience.
