In de late jaren 90 verhuist de achtjarige Sasha met haar Canadees-Hongaarse familie naar het idyllische Vancouver Island. Heldere luchten, eindeloze natuur en zorgeloze dagen aan het strand vormen het decor van haar jeugd. Ze speelt met haar broers, sluit voorzichtig vriendschappen en verkent de vrijheid van haar nieuwe thuis. Maar onder de oppervlakte is een onzichtbare dreiging voelbaar. Sasha’s oudere broer Jeremy worstelt met zichzelf en zijn steeds moeilijkere, onvoorspelbare gedrag zet het gezin onder druk. Het werpt een schaduw over hun nieuwe leven. Sasha begrijpt niet wat hem kwelt, maar zoekt toch zijn nabijheid. In een zeldzaam moment van verbondenheid geeft Jeremy haar een klein, gestolen sieraad. Een breekbaar symbool van liefde, verlies en verlangen naar begrip.

In Blue Heron, het speelfilmdebuut van de Canadees-Hongaarse filmmaker Sophy Romvari, vloeien herinnering en verbeelding in elkaar over in een persoonlijk en gelaagd portret van familie en opgroeien. De film, deels gebaseerd op Romvari’s eigen jeugd, volgt Sasha niet alleen als kind, maar ook als volwassene die via foto’s en homevideo’s haar jeugd probeert te reconstrueren. Met deze caleidoscopische vertelstructuur doorbreekt Blue Heron de conventies van het traditionele coming-of-ageverhaal. De film ging in wereldpremière op het Locarno Film Festival en was daarna te zien op onder meer het Toronto International Film Festival, het Leiden International Film Festival en Film Fest Gent, waar hij diverse prijzen in de wacht sleepte. “Het fantastische familiedrama ‘Blue Heron’ toont hoe grillig het geheugen is.” (Trouw*****)

An intimate search for memories and understanding within a family in crisis on idyllic Vancouver Island.

In the late 1990s, eight-year-old Sasha and her Canadian-Hungarian family move to idyllic Vancouver Island. Bright skies, endless nature and carefree days on the beach make up the decor of her youth. She plays with her brothers, cautiously makes friends and explores the freedom of her new home. But under the surface an invisible threat is palpable. Sasha’s older brother Jeremy struggles with himself, and his increasingly difficult, unpredictable behaviour creates a crisis for the family. He casts a shadow on their new life. Sasha doesn’t understand what is troubling him, but she seeks out his company. In a rare moment of connection, Jeremy gives her a small stolen piece of jewellery: a fragile symbol of love, loss, and longing for understanding.

In Blue Heron, the feature film debut of Canadian-Hungarian filmmaker Sophy Romvari, memory and imagination merge in a personal and layered portrait of family and growing up. The film, based in part on Romvari’s own youth, follows Sasha not only as a child but also as an adult trying to reconstruct her youth from photos and home videos. With its kaleidoscopic storytelling structure, Blue Heron breaks with the conventions of the traditional coming-of-age tale.
