Fernando is een timide docent geografie in Barcelona met een bijzondere voorliefde voor papieren landkaarten. Die kaarten helpen hem niet wanneer zijn vrouw op een ochtend, zonder waarschuwing of uitleg, haar spullen pakt en hij richtingloos achterblijft. Fernando besluit naar het noordwesten van Portugal te reizen waar hij tuinman Manuel ontmoet, die net zou beginnen aan een baan bij een prachtig oud landhuis. Wanneer Manuel plotseling overlijdt, neemt Fernando in een opwelling zijn identiteit aan. Hij reist af naar de quinta van de eigenzinnige eigenaresse Amália, met wie hij een bijzondere, ongedwongen vriendschap sluit.

Dit elegante, tikje melancholische drama neemt het rustige tempo aan van het leven op een quinta, geïnspireerd door een waargebeurd verhaal. De vertelling, met veel oog voor detail, wordt gedragen door het warme acteerwerk van Manolo Solo (Pan’s Labyrinth) en de altijd fantastische Maria de Medeiros (Pulp Fiction). The Portuguese House ging in première op het Malaga Film Festival en werd genomineerd  voor drie Goya’s, de belangrijkste Spaanse filmprijzen.

A gentle, melancholy drama about a geography lecturer devastated by a life crisis, who becomes a gardener in rural Portugal.

Fernando, a shy geography university lecturer in Barcelona, loves paper maps, but they are of no help to him when, one morning, with no warning or explanation, his wife packs her bags and leaves. Left adrift, he travels to northwestern Portugal. There, he meets Manuel, who’s going to a beautiful old country house to take a job as gardener. When Manuel suddenly dies, Fernando impulsively assumes his identity and travels to the quinta, which is owned by the eccentric Amália, with whom he forms a special, easygoing friendship.

This elegant, wistful drama inspired by a true story unfolds at the leisurely pace of quinta life. The narrative, told with great attention to detail, is carried by the warm performances of Manolo Solo (Pan’s Labyrinth) and the always fantastic Maria de Medeiros (Pulp Fiction). The Portuguese House premiered at the Málaga Film Festival and was nominated for three Goyas, Spain’s most prestigious film awards.
