Nadat zijn pleeggezin hem uit huis heeft gezet, trekt Christy in bij zijn broer Shane en zijn prille gezin in het Ierse Cork. De broers hebben elkaar lang niet gezien en Shane ziet dit als een tijdelijke situatie. Christy begint zich echter steeds meer thuis te voelen en wordt opgenomen in een kleine hechte gemeenschap. Hij komt ook in aanraking met slechte invloeden uit zijn jeugd waarvan Shane, met hulp van de lokale community, hem juist wil weghouden. Samen moeten ze zich verzoenen met hun turbulente verleden en beslissen hoe de toekomst eruit zal gaan zien.

Christy, het speelfilmdebuut van de Ierse Brendan Canty, won de Grand Prix (Generation 14plus) op de Berlinale van 2025 en toont het authentieke en rauwe leven in een arbeiderswijk in Ierland, met overtuigend spel van de jonge hoofdrolspelers en een krachtig neergezet gemeenschapsgevoel. Christy is geïnspireerd op de ervaringen van betrokken jongeren en een groot deel van de cast is afkomstig uit de Kabin Studio in Cork, een non-profit gemeenschapsruimte die is ontstaan uit liefde voor hiphop en kunst. “An incredible breakthrough performance from newcomer Power is what really solidifies Christy as a must-see.” (Loud & Clear *****)

This heartwarming coming-of-age drama follows Christy, a teenager from an Irish working-class area, as he approaches adulthood.

After being kicked out by his foster family, Christy moves in with his brother Shane and his young family in the Irish city of Cork. The brothers haven’t seen each other in a long time and as far as Shane is concerned, this is just a temporary arrangement. But Christy starts feeling more and more at home, becoming accepted into a small, close-knit community. He is also exposed to the negative influences of his youth, from which Shane, with the support of local people, is determined to shield him. Together, they must put their turbulent past behind them and make decisions about the future.

Christy, Irish director Brendan Canty’s feature film debut, won the Grand Prix in the Generation 14plus section at the 2025 Berlin International Film Festival. It authentically depicts life in an Irish working-class neighbourhood, with convincing performances from the young protagonists and a powerful sense of community. Christy draws on the experiences of the young people involved, and a large part of the cast comes from the Kabin Studio in Cork, a non-profit community hub created out of a love for hip-hop and art. “An incredible breakthrough performance from newcomer Power is what really solidifies Christy as a must-see.” (Loud & Clear *****)
