El Jockey

Ooit was Remo Manfredini een legendarische jockey, maar zijn zelfdestructieve gedrag bracht hem op het verkeerde pad. Nu racet hij vooral om zijn torenhoge schulden af te lossen bij een criminele bende, geleid door de louche maffiabaas Sirena. Tijdens de belangrijkste race van zijn leven gaat het mis: Remo veroorzaakt een tragisch ongeluk waarbij een van de meest waardevolle paarden omkomt. Zelf raakt hij zwaargewond. Als hij in het ziekenhuis bijkomt, slaat hij op de vlucht. Met het verband nog om zijn hoofd neemt hij een nieuwe identiteit aan en zwerft door de straten van Buenos Aires, op de vlucht voor Sirena.

El Jockey is de nieuwe film van Luis Ortega, de toonaangevende Argentijnse regisseur die bekend staat om zijn poëtisch geladen en visueel intense stijl. Door de absurde humor en de scherpe contrasten doet de film denken aan het werk van Wes Anderson, Yorgos Lanthimos en Aki Kaurismäki. Met El Jockey presenteert Ortega een tragikomische studie over roem, vervreemding en identiteit. Quirky black comedy about a jockey who’s  fallen on hard times in Buenos Aires.

Remo Manfredini was once a legendary jockey, but his self-destructive behaviour led him astray. Now he races mainly to pay off his sky-high debts to a criminal gang led by the shady mafia boss Sirena. But things go badly wrong during the most important race of his life: he causes a tragic accident in which one of the most valuable horses is killed and he himself is seriously injured. After  he regains consciousness in hospital, he escapes. With his head wrapped in bandages, he assumes a new identity and wanders the streets of Buenos Aires, on the run from Sirena.

El Jockey (Kill the Jockey) is the new film by Luis Ortega, the leading Argentine director, known for his poetically charged and visually intense style. With its absurd humour and sharp contrasts, the film is reminiscent of the work of Wes Anderson, Yorgos Lanthimos and Aki Kaurismäki. With El Jockey, Ortega presents a tragicomic study of fame, alienation and identity.
