De zeventienjarige Ainara (overtuigend neergezet door Blanca Soroa in haar eerste speelfilm) is een intelligente en idealistische vrouw die op jonge leeftijd haar moeder verloor. Net als haar religieuze moeder en andere familieleden gaat ze naar een christelijke school. Iedereen in haar omgeving verwacht dat ze gaat studeren, maar zelf lijkt ze meer te voelen voor een contemplatief leven als non. Wanneer Ainara haar familie vertelt dat ze overweegt om zich aan te sluiten bij de nonnen lokt dit uiteenlopende reacties uit.

Los Domingos van de Spaanse regisseur Alauda Ruiz de Azúa (Dicen, CincoLobitos) is voer voor discussie, en verkent de positieve kanten én de keerzijdes van Ainara’s religieuze roeping. Tegelijkertijd roept het vragen op over tolerantie, indoctrinatie, conformisme en persoonlijke vrijheid. Met subtiele observaties en scherpe dialogen ontstaat een indringend portret van een jong meisje dat haar eigen pad probeert te vinden. De film was in Spanje een enorm succes, en won maar liefst vijf Goya Awards, waaronder die voor Beste Film en voor Beste Regisseur. A subtle and beautifully told Basque family drama in which a 17-year-old girl decides to become a nun, much against the wishes of her worldly aunt.

Seventeen-year-old Ainara (convincingly portrayed by Blanca Soroa in her feature film debut) is an intelligent and idealistic young woman who lost her mother when a child. Like her religious mother and other family members, she attends a Catholic school. Everyone around her expects her to go to college, but Ainara herself seems to prefer a contemplative life as a nun. When she tells her family that she is thinking about entering a convent, their reactions are varied.

 Los Domingos by Spanish director Alauda Ruiz de Azúa (Dicen, CincoLobitos) provides food for debate by exploring both the positive and the downsides of Ainara’s religious calling. At the same time, it raises questions about tolerance, indoctrination, conformism and personal freedom. Through subtle observations and sharp dialogue, a poignant portrait emerges of a young person trying to find her own path in life. The film was a huge success in Spain, winning no fewer than five Goya Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
