1511: Magellan landt op Malakka, een van de belangrijkste handels- en religieuze steden in Maleisië. De tocht van de Portugese ontdekkingsreiziger is lang en zwaar geweest. Honger, noodweer en een muitende bemanning heeft de ambitieuze Magellan getrotseerd, nu is het tijd om fortuin te rapen. Wat volgt is een nietsontziende verovering en rooftocht door de Maleisische archipel door een man die bezeten is van de gedachte dat de Aziatische ‘heidenen’ gekerstend dienen te worden, indien niet goedschiks dan via het zwaard. Magellans optreden als kolonisator in naam van de Spaanse koning zaait niet alleen angst, maar ontketent ook een serie gewelddadige opstanden onder de bevolking; de paranoïde tiran die Magellan geworden is, groeit de situatie boven het hoofd.

Voor Magellan contracteerde de Filipijnse grootmeester Lav Diaz voor het eerst een bekende acteur voor de hoofdrol, Gael García Bernal. Diaz laat hem zowel de menselijke als onmenselijke kanten van Magellan vertolken en doet zo de – in Spanje nog altijd vereerde – mythe van de strenge maar rechtvaardige kolonisator verkruimelen. Het epische Magellan is na uitbreng al vergeleken met antikoloniale klassiekers als Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes (1972) van Werner Herzog en Gillo Pontecorvo’s Queimada! (1969). Net als in Herzogs portret van de waanzinnig geworden Aguirre speelt de kracht van de natuur een grote rol; Diaz focust in lange takes op regendruppels en bloemen en laat de kijker bijna verdwijnen in het groen van de jungle. “The movie is often visually intoxicating, at moments gasp-out-loud ravishing, especially in its presentation of the natural world.” (New York Times)

A superbly filmed epic about Portuguese explorer Magellan, who conquered the Malay archipelago for the Spanish Crown.

1511: Magellan lands in Malacca, one of Malaysia’s primary trading and religious hubs. The Portuguese explorer’s journey has been long and punishing. Having braved hunger, violent storms and a mutinous crew, he is ready to secure his fortune. What follows is the ruthless conquest and plundering of the Malay archipelago by a man obsessed with converting Asian ‘heathens’ to Christianity – by force if necessary. Magellan’s actions on behalf of the Spanish king sow fear and trigger a series of violent uprisings; eventually, the situation spins out of control for the paranoid tyrant he has become.

For Magellan, master Filipino filmmaker Lav Diaz cast a high-profile actor, Gael García Bernal, in the lead role for the first time. Bernal portrays both the human and monstrous sides of Magellan, shattering the myth – one that is still revered in Spain – of the stern but just coloniser. Since its release, the epic Magellan has been compared to anti-colonial classics such as Werner Herzog’s Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) and Gillo Pontecorvo’s Burn! (1969).
