Marianna Brennand – Brazil, Portugal, 2024 – 107 minutes – language spoken: Portuguese; with English subtitles
Deep in the Brazilian Amazon, Tielle dreams of a life far from home, inspired by her sister who left the jungle years ago. As she grows older, the illusions she clings to begin to crumble and her safe home situation becomes something much darker. During a clandestine trip aboard a passing cargo boat, Tielle gets a glimpse of the coveted outside world, but it too brings dangers. Determined to protect herself, her younger sister and all the other women in the community, she does everything she can to break the traditions that humiliate and oppress them.
Manas was co-produced by Walter Salles and the Dardenne brothers and won the Best Director Award at the Venice Film Festival and the Grand Jury Fiction Prize at Movies That Matter.
The Tinku Foundation is organizing a benefit meal before the film screening. This meal is intended to raise money to support a group of young women in the rural areas of Maranura-Cusco, Peru. These young women, mostly single mothers, have been victims of various forms of violence. The money will be used for a project where they can develop their talents and thus empower themselves. The initiative came from a Peruvian woman living in Wageningen who will be volunteering in Peru through the Tinku Foundation.
The doors will open at 6:00 pm, the meal starts at 6:15 pm. Two delicious Peruvian dishes will be prepared: pumpkin and quinoa soup as a starter, and a choice between a vegetarian and a causa with fish (tuna) as the main course. Causa is mashed potato prepared with oil, lime and yellow chili, filled with fresh vegetables. The price for the meal is 20 euros, and payment is due in cash on the evening of the screening. A reservation can be made via info@tinku.nl or by phone: 0610750126. For those who prefer to pay by bank account: NL71 SNSB 0927457784 in the name of Project Peru, Stichting Tinku, Wageningen.
