Pavel ‘Pasha’ Talankin is een geliefde en bescheiden leraar in het Russische stadje Karabash. Zijn leerlingen dragen hem op handen; hij is een mentor, grappenmaker en veilige haven voor iedereen die zich anders voelt. Maar wanneer Rusland Oekraïne binnenvalt, verandert zijn school in een toneel van staatspropaganda. De vlaggen gaan omhoog, geschiedenislessen worden herschreven en kinderen moeten marsen lopen en militaire odes zingen. Als schoolvideograaf krijgt Pasha de opdracht om alles vast te leggen. Wat hij filmt, is niet het glanzende patriottisme dat van hem verwacht wordt, maar de sluipende angst, het verlies van vrijheid en de militarisering van een hele generatie. Zijn camera wordt zijn wapen.

Het resultaat is een scherpe en ontluisterende film over staatscontrole, de kwetsbaarheid van onderwijs en de morele keuzes die gewone burgers moeten maken onder druk van het regime. Tegelijkertijd behoudt de film een onverwachte lichtheid en humor. Ondanks de dreiging en de ernst van wat hij vastlegt, blijft Pasha een lichtvoetige en sprankelende verteller. Zijn grappen, zijn warmte en zijn scherpe observaties maken de film tot een bijzonder document. An engrossing and moving film about – and made by – a school teacher in Russia who captures on video changes in the country, and in particular in the atmosphere at his school, after the invasion of Ukraine.

Pavel “Pasha” Talankin is a beloved and unassuming teacher in the Russian town of Karabash. His students adore him; he is a mentor and joker and his classroom is a safe haven for those who feel different. But when Russia invades Ukraine, his school turns into a stage for state propaganda. Flags are raised, history lessons are rewritten, and the pupils are forced to march and sing military songs. Pasha is the school videographer, so is tasked with documenting it all. What he films is not the glitzy patriotism he’s expected to record, but the creeping fear, the loss of freedom, and the militarisation of an entire generation. His camera becomes his weapon.

The result is a sharp, disturbing film about state control, the vulnerability of education, and the moral choices ordinary citizens must make under pressure from the regime. At the same time, the film retains an unexpected lightness and humour. Despite the menace and gravity of what he captures, Pasha remains a light-hearted sparkling storyteller. His jokes, warmth and sharp observations make the film a remarkable document.
