Wanneer de succesvolle en zelfverzekerde optometrist Hortense Cumberbatch, een jonge zwarte vrouw uit Londen, op zoek gaat naar haar biologische moeder, ontdekt ze een waarheid die haar wereld op zijn kop zet. Zijn huwelijk kent zijn eigen spanningen, en de lang verborgen geheimen binnen de familie dreigen aan de oppervlakte te komen.

Met een subtiele mix van realisme, humor en emotionele diepgang verkent Secrets & Lies thema’s als identiteit, familie en de impact van verborgen waarheden. Regisseur Mike Leigh creëerde een film die zowel ontroerend als aangrijpend is, met briljant improvisatiespel en een meeslepend narratief dat de complexiteit van menselijke relaties blootlegt. De film won in 1996 de Gouden Palm op het Filmfestival van Cannes, kreeg maar liefst 5 Oscarnominaties en werd in 2025 opnieuw uitgebracht.

Her mother Cynthia is a lonely, white factory worker living in poverty in East London with her rebellious daughter Roxanne. Cynthia’s initial shock and denial give way to a tentative bond with Hortense – a connection that throws Cynthia’s life and family dynamics into turmoil. As she struggles to confront her past, her brother Maurice, a kind-hearted photographer, also plays a crucial role in the drama. His own marriage is fraught with tension, and long-buried family secrets threaten to come to light.

Blending realism, humour and emotional depth, Secrets & Lies explores themes such as identity, family and the impact of hidden truths. Director Mike Leigh has created a film that is both moving and poignant, featuring brilliant improvisational acting and a compelling narrative that lays bare the complexity of human relationships. The film won the Palme d’Or at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival and received no fewer than five Oscar nominations. It was re-released in 2025.
